About this event

Carrie Johnson, Supreme Court and Justice Correspondent for NPR, brings years of experience covering the U.S. Department of Justice and the federal courts. Previously a reporter for The Washington Post, she has followed the Justice Department through four presidential administrations, from changing approaches to national security and civil rights to the norm-breaking tumult of the second Trump administration.

Carrie will discuss the most recent Supreme Court term, including decisions that have significantly expanded presidential power—changes that could affect not only President Trump but future presidents as well. She will also discuss the Court’s consideration of birthright citizenship, one of the term’s most consequential cases, as the administration continues to press for limits on citizenship.

Other topics will include the Court’s decisions involving President Trump’s tariffs, cases affecting the balance of power in this year’s midterm elections, and decisions concerning the ability of presidents to remove independent regulatory commissioners. Together, these cases raise important questions about the independence of government agencies and the balance of power among the branches of government.

Carrie’s talk will include time for questions and answers, giving Villagers an opportunity to learn more about these landmark cases and what the Court’s decisions may mean for the future.
